Noticed my internet was unusually slow today. As in under 2Mbps. A bit of investigation and a call to my ISP uncovered that my modem was too old. I headed out on the town and picked up a new one, brought it home, unboxed it, and went to plug the cable into it.

It wouldn’t plug.

You know how there’s this long wire sticking out of the coaxial cable? Well, it wouldn’t slide into the hole in the modem’s port. So there was no way to attach the cable to the modem.

Was pretty frustrated for a bit, thinking I’d have to go out and buy some more equipment or rewire my house or something. Then I got the brainstorm of the century!

Pliers.

I took a needle-nosed pliers to the wire, gently pinching the end. Next I tried plugging it in again and—lo and behold! It worked!

Spent the rest of the evening setting up and fine-tuning, and now enjoy internet speeds up to five or six times what I’m used to! Worth it all!

Merry Christmas, me!
