Just getting back from vacation! I want to take the chance to thank Auri for their very kind assessment of one of my posts on mental illness and anime. And also thanks to Crow for selecting me for the Pirate Crew tag. And my 177 Twitter followers: Between vocal conversationalists, silent lurking readers, and spambots, you’ve brought my follower count up to match my ‘followee’ count. The first two groups in particular are greatly appreciated by yours truly.
I just finished the first twenty volumes of Attack on Titan and the first sixteen of Attack on Titan: Before the Fall. While I think it’s generally agreed that the original AOT was one of the higher-quality stories to come out in the last few years, I wasn’t familiar with the prequel. Turns out it’s written by a different person than the original, and it shows. Not that BTF is a bad story, mind you; it just lacks the no-holds-barred grittiness that marked AOT. BTF is a decent exercise in world building, with some shonen-style action and romance to move things along; AOT reads as if someone read a bunch of Charles Dickens and Stephen King and said, “Man, this is too upbeat.”
First Impression season is upon us! So far I’ve done three for Beneath the Tangles.
Though it’s not an anime, I’ve also toyed with doing a FI of “Good Omens”. Would that be of interest to any of you, my faithful readers?
While the spring only brought a couple shows that really caught my attention (a fact which I blame on climate change), looks like summer is a bumper crop! In addition to the above shows, I’m also intrigued by:
- Vinland Saga (SO gorgeous!)
- Astra: Lost in Space (loved the manga!)
- Fire Force (literally fighting fire… with fire!)
There are a few others I’ll take a gander at, but these are the creme de la creme.
Meanwhile, I’ve also introduced my kids to Bodacious Space Pirates. Great show. Has nothing to do with Crow’s nomination, I promise!
